π¦. π¦π«π±π’π―ππ―π’π±ππ±π¦π¬π« β Astarion is a playable character and companion in the game baldur's gate iii based on the ttrpg dungeons and dragons, which is set in the the forgotten realms (5e). some things about my portrayal of astarion will not change regardless of the direction the game takes. i've been writing astarion for 2.5 years, and there are certain things so ingrained in how i write him, that removing them wouldn't make the astarion i've enjoyed writing thus far!My portrayal of astarion is largely based on headcanons of my own making, and influenced by relationships i have established in my own interpretation and with friends since EA launched. i strongly recommend reading through some of my headcanons and the about tags located on my blog. even so, i still (mostly, like 90%) align with game canon.Important: popular fandom characterisation portrays astarion in ways i am not a fan of, which can be summed up as: don't expect me grossly mischaracterise and reduce him to fit fandom tropes. my goal is to write an astarion that i enjoy by exploring the full depth of his character; my characterisation is completely my own.astarion's character also draws on dark and mature themes. exploring these themes will be treated with the sensitivity and respect these subjects deserve.

astarion was a baldurian magistrate that was turned after his growing unpopularity culminated in an assault that very near killed him. astarion was "saved" by a baldurian vampire lord, cazador, and he remained his thrall for over two hundred years.the nautiloid attack, however, saw astarion whisked away from baldur's gate, and his master β offering him a strange new freedom he had not experienced in centuries. freedom of mind, choice and action were all his to command, and he fully intended to use this freedom however he saw fit.

β Born into a family of power and privilege, astarion was raised on his family's wealth, and entitled to all of its trappings: status, connections, his pick of the world. he found his place amongst the elite, and he thrived in its extravagance, as well as its treachery; young astarion quickly learned to sharpen both his wits and his blades.Decades spent crafting his reputation, his image, allowed astarion to gather support for politics, particularly the law. life was good... for a time, but home became stagnant ( and the young lord likely became bored ), and he left the comfort of his family home for the city of baldur's gate. a new city, new faces β life was exciting again.As a magistrate of the gate, astarion did little to the curry the favour of the downtrodden. he was characteristically known to be harsh and unsympathetic, and it was this attitude that inevitably set the wrath of the common people against him. a hand in the darkness would be his saviour, and his torment.

β He, the hunter, emerged from the nothing to rescue astarion with the promise of life and without thought, took it. this gift, however, was not priceless; no sooner was this renewal of life granted to him before it was taken away. astarion became a thrall to cazador, a slave in his coven, and no longer was he a man, but a vampire.Astarion had his place in the coven, and it was a role he fulfilled dutifully for centuries. a collector of sorts, yet not of trinkets or rarities, but of bodies. he was tasked with prowling the streets of baldur's gate, seducing and luring the city's most beautiful back to cazador, where their inevitable demise awaited them.Staples of aristocracy became his hunting grounds; Astarion's forays into the night allowed him a brief reprieve from the tortures of his master, finding a false peace in the intimate comforts of others, yet reminding him all the same of what was taken from him. never did he linger long, and always before dawn, he returned to the shadows.

dungeons & dragons - baldur's gate 3: astarion was a captive aboard the nautiloid and upon its crash landing, was freed. within his head was planted an illithid tadpole, where the end result would be a painful transformation into a mind flayer.shortly thereafter, he joined the ship's other escapees, all of whom were also infected. a challenge had been set before them to remove the parasites, however, in the days after their capture, the group obtained unusual powers, presumably given to them by the tadpoles.in astarion's case, side effects of his vampirism were now null, such as avoidance of sunlight and invitation into homes. he welcomed the control over himself he was denied for centuries, and frequently encouraged the use of the tadpole.
